L-Alanosine
Definition and Synonyms

Definition: An amino acid analog derived from Streptomyces alanosinicus. Two different pathways exist for AMP synthesis, de novo and salvage; the salvage pathway is frequently deleted in selected common cancers. As a purine antagonist, L-alanosine inhibits adenylosuccinate synthetase, an enzyme involved in the de novo synthesis pathway, exhibiting selectivity for those tumors in which the salvage pathway for AMP synthesis is deleted and resulting in diminished DNA synthesis.
