Early Gastric Cancer
Definition and Synonyms

Definition: Recently defined by Japanese researchers as a superficial carcinoma confined to the mucosa, or mucosa and submucosa, of the gastric wall. The regional lymph nodes may or may not be involved. Most cases occur in the distal third of the stomach. The 5-year survival following resection is between 80% and 95%, and remains high even when lymph node metastases are present. -- 2003
