X-Ray Repair Cross Complementing Protein-3
Definition and Synonyms
Definition: X-Ray Repair Cross Complementing Protein 3 (XRCC3), encoded by the XRCC3 gene, is a member of the RecA/Rad51-related protein family that participates in homologous recombination to maintain chromosome stability and repair DNA damage. XRCC3 interacts directly with RAD51 and may cooperate with RAD51 during recombinational repair. A rare microsatellite polymorphism in this gene is associated with cancer in patients of varying radiosensitivity and exposure to UV radiation is a major risk factor for the development of malignant melanoma. DNA damage caused by UV radiation is thought to play a major role in carcinogenesis. The association between polymorphisms in DNA repair genes and the development of malignant melanoma, a T allele at position 18067 in exon 7 of the XRCC3 gene is significantly associated with melanoma development.
