Idarubicin Hydrochloride
Definition and Synonyms

Definition: The hydrochloride salt of the anthracycline antineoplastic antibiotic idarubicin. Idarubicin intercalates into DNA and interacts with topoisomerase II, thereby inhibiting DNA replication and repair and RNA and protein synthesis. This agent also produces toxic free-radical intermediates and interacts with cell membrane lipids causing lipid peroxidation. Due to its high lipophilicity, idarubicin HCL penetrates cell membranes better than other anthracycline antibiotics. (NCI04)
